10 Years of Treasure Island Music Festival

This weekend marks the Treasure Island Music Festival’s 10th anniversary. While the Bay Area is somewhat spoiled with music festivals, ranging from the juggernaut Outside Lands to the free (!) Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to relative newcomer BottleRock, Treasure Island may be our favorite.

For anyone who’s had the pleasure of attending the Treasure Island Music Festival, the reasons for our fondness won’t come as a surprise. Unlike other music festivals of its caliber, attendees have the opportunity to hear every act, as the Treasure Island artists alternate playing on two stages in close proximity. Event promoters Another Planet Entertainment and Noise Pop cleverly split the two-day festival into an electronic/hip-hop leaning lineup followed the next day by an indie-rock leaning lineup.

In addition to these artistic merits, the Treasure Island Music Festival boasts a stunningly beautiful setting, a bittersweet fact given that this will be the event’s last year in its namesake location. While its placement in the middle of the Bay makes for some cold fall nights, the view of San Francisco and its surroundings—especially from the top of the festival’s iconic Ferris wheel—has more than made up for it. Unfortunately due to a massive development project on the island, the festival moves to a new (and currently unannounced) location for 2017.

As longtime fans, we’ve created a special Treasure Island Music Festival Mixtape celebrating the festival’s first decade. We picked one song apiece for the 20 diverse musicians who have served as headliners. Enjoy!

Featuring Massive Attack, Modest Mouse, The xx, and more
